Kinja'd!!!

My girlfriend's family and I will be going to NYC between Christmas and New Years. I'm trying to help put together an itinerary, but I want to do things that are not the typical tourist destinations. We have done those already. Any suggestions?

Does it operate like a museum? Can anyone just roll up and explore the showroom?

Might be some interesting things here . Though you may wish to pass on the Museum of Sex. I went to the sex museum in Copenhagen, though, and it was pretty interesting. Maybe something here . And there's a lot more. I googled " New York city off the beaten path "

My favorite things are (some are touristy):

The Highline

New Museum

PS1 in LIC (have lunch at M. Well's inside - it's just as good as it used to be in the old diner location)

The Zero installation at the Guggenheim looks like it's pretty cool - haven't been yet.

Drinks at the top of the Standard (I know, I know... but I still love it)

Restaurant at the Museum of Art and Design, overlooking Central Park (jazz band plays Sunday brunch, if I remember correctly).

Let me know if you need more or specifics. :)

EDIT: Also the Cloisters!!!

The Halal Guys at 6th Ave and 53rd. You can literally feed a family of four with two $7 boxes of food from this stand. Waaaay better than most street food.

I like Central Park whenever.

Burger Joint. Half my ideas would be about food. Of course they would.

Dim sum should be cheaper in Chinatown. If anyone finds a really solid deal, let me know.

Do Harlem. If you have money Red Rooster is a great place to eat. A little cheaper is Lidos. If you just wanna hang Harlem Tavern is tight as well. The area around Columbia University is nice as well. Great farmers market.

Also take a stroll down St mark's place downtown. U will be glad u did.

I used to live up in the city, this post is about to get long.

Restaurants - My favorite is A Casa Fox it is Nicaraguan food, which is basically meats with a lot of natural flavors and rices. http://acasafox.com . This is located in Lower Manhattan. If you are doing some shopping at canal and you want a place for lunch and like Chinese go to Hop Kee. http://hopkeenyc.com It has a main street entrance down the stairs to a large basement. I love chinese so this place is a must whenever I visit. These two are my favorite now I'll give you some links to some other restaurants. My favorite dress up go out restaurant and bar area is The Standard. This place has amazing food, a full beer garden attached to it along with a mini ice rink. After dinner the beer garden is a great place to hang and is huge. http://www.thestandardgrill.com . If no one in your party can decided where to eat go to NYC Eataly this is located in center city NYC it has roof top restaurants, places to shop, try food, wine and beer bars and is amazing. http://www.eataly.com . Here are two more restaurants you may enjoy http://socarratrestaurants.com (paella/mulitple locals in nyc), http://www.yelp.com/biz/soho-park-… (recommend this for food and beer on a budget under $10).

Bars Beer - https://www.google.com/maps/@40.73105… . That is my google maps of my favorite beer bars in nyc. You will rarely find yourself far from one. I love beer so these are primarily beer bars. Blind Tiger Ale House http://www.blindtigeralehouse.com warm cozy, full fire, great beer, decent menu. Plus right down the street is Murray's Cheese, which is just god damn fantastic. Rattle -N-Hum this bar is huge, walking distance to grand central (8 blocks) you will always find a seat and a drink you like. They have a sister bar that is even larger right by Times Square in Hell's Kitchen called Beer Authority.

Bars liquor - Bathtub gin is a bar and a burlesque show. http://bathtubginnyc.com . If it is just adults everyone will have fun here. If you are waiting in grand central there is a hidden bar called The Campbell Apartment, it is a very cool hangout when you are waiting and want to be away from the hustle of the trains below. http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-campbe… . If you want to see a breathtaking view of NYC you can either call the Hudson Hotel to see if their rooftop bar is open or go to 230 Fifth in midtown. This place is NOT cheap, but there is no cover and you can get away with just sipping on one 16$ rum and coke and take in all the christmas decorations. http://www.230-fifth.com . Little branch is a 1920's style speakeasy and is a very unique atmosphere. http://www.yelp.com/biz/little-bra…

Places to visit - The highline as mentioned in a previous post is really cool. I'd make it a point to go to Bryant Park. They have homemade shops, hot chocolate, a neat bar overlooking the ice rink, and nothing is more chirstmas-y in NYC than this at night. FAO Schwarz because it is fun even if a million people are there. Gotham City comedy club but avoid HA, it sucks. Window displays at Macys and tree at Rockefeller Center. Freedom tower, broadway The Book of Mormon.

If you need more things to do just let me know. I love NYC and miss it so much. Most of those places aren't touristy. Once you get south of times square, Tourism drops and NYC because cheaper and more fun when you get closer to SOHO/NOHO/Lower Manhattan/West Village (my favorite for food and drinks).

Not to poopoo miata's suggestions... but the new museum is really a hit or miss, study up before you go.

and moma, while it has some very important work is a shit show with crowds during that week... and pretty much every weekend, and every weekday between thanksgiving and new years.

You've already got some killer suggestions, something else to look at as far as museums is the Museum of Natural History that and the planetarium attached to it are great experiences if you're into that sort of thing.

Everyone already touched on the rooftop bars/restaurants, Broadway, Central Park, landmarks.
